What is Diesel Exhaust Fluid?

DEF is a fuel additive that reduces harmful emissions of nitrogen oxide from diesel engines. It is a urea solution made up of two components: High-purity urea, and deionized water.

DEF is odorless, clear, biodegradable, non-flammable, and safe to handle – and its use is required by the government for all new diesel vehicles.

How It Works

The exhaust produced by diesel-powered vehicles contains nitrogen oxides, a group of harmful gasses. Through the use of Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology within the vehicle, DEF is injected into the exhaust stream, which breaks down the toxic gasses into water vapor and nitrogen gas. These already exist in the air we breathe, and have no adverse effects on humans or the environment.
